What is it?
RayCoats is a jacket designed to mirror the Manta ray form and pay homage to the connection between humans and the natural environment. By pulling from biological elements of the manta ray form, the garment is intended to soften the difference between us and the animals, which would, in turn, hopefully inspire the wearer to be more conscious of daily decisions that may impact other species.

How does it innovate?
I wanted to create a unique form, so I created my own pattern by combining multiple existing patterns and adding my own details. I then created a muslin mockup to ensure the dimensions would fit on my body correctly. I wanted an oversized fit to make it work for a wide range of body types. Specific details include a cephalic fin-inspired collar, contrast fabric gill pockets, magnetic front closures, and back patterning based on manta ray patterns.
What is the impact?
These jackets were designed to foster community. The ray is essentially wrapping itself around the user while the user is wearing the jacket. A positive environmental impact is created through fostering a connection that makes one question each plastic bag they use when wearing a jacket with unique ray features they love.
